Richard Slawinski

February 26, 1929 — January 31, 2016

Richard Joseph Slawinski finished the purposes set before him on earth at 11:00 pm on January 31, 2016. As the only son of Edward and Edna Slawinski, Richard began his life journey on February 26, 1929 in Bloomfield, NJ. After high school, he served his country in the US Army. While at home on leave, he met the love of his life, Dolores Swayne, of Mt. Holly, NJ.  Richard and Dolores wed on June 25, 1955 and were married for 53 years. After living in Bloomfield, NJ for 16 years, they relocated with their two children, Robert and Mary, to the village of Rancocas, NJ where they spent the next 35 years living in their beautiful farmhouse on Main Street.
Richard loved golfing, cars, both old and new, woodworking, and homemade food. He was an excellent role model, husband and father. In 2007 when his wife, Dolores, had a stroke, he spent the next two years devoted to caring for her every need. He cared for her with love and tenderness that was a beautiful gift to those who were privileged to watch. Other than his wife, the other loves of Richard’s life were his two children, Robert and Mary. There was absolutely nothing that he wouldn’t do for his family. Whether practicing “tough love” when needed or extending grace and mercy, Richard taught his children how to live well, love well, and in the end, finish well.
Richard was preceded in death by his son David in 1959, and by his beautiful wife Dolores in 2009. He is survived by his son Robert Slawinski and his wife Sue of Lansdale, PA; his daughter Mary Murray and her husband Phil of Olathe, KS; as well as his six amazing grandchildren: Christopher Murray, Erin Murray, Susan Slawinski, Cina Murray, Roberta Slawinski and Sara Slawinski. If you happened to visit him at Santa Marta, you would listen to him burst with pride as he spoke of the many dreams and achievements of his grandchildren.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Jack Moran, and his nephew, George Frake and family, both of Medford, NJ.
It is not easy to say goodbye to a man loved so deeply by his children, family members and friends. Richard lived his life with a smile on his face, love in his heart and a childlike faith that made his love and friendship irresistible.
A memorial service celebrating Richard’s life will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, February 20th in the chapel of the Santa Marta Retirement Community, 13800 W. 116th St, Olathe, KS 66062.
In lieu of flowers, Richard’s family requests that donations be made to Catholic Community Hospice, 9720 W. 87th Street Overland Park, KS 66212. www.CatholicCharitiesKS.org
