David R. Solenberger, 66, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Kansas City Hospice House after six years of cancer treatment and participation in melanoma clinical research trials. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday April 5th 2014 at 10:00 am at Colonial United Church of Christ at 7033 Mission Road in Prairie Village, Kansas followed by inurnment at Johnson County Cemetery, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS.
Dave was born in 1947 in Amery, Wisconsin to Ira and Emma Solenberger. The family relocated to Prairie Village in 1952 where he attended school, graduating from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1965. Dave was a dedicated Boy Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Dave graduated from Kansas State University, earning both a BA and MA Cum Laude in Economics. He also completed a Public Administration MS from University of Central Michigan.
After a productive 31 year career with US General Accounting Office, Dave retired in 2000. As he advanced from auditor to Evaluator-In-Charge, Dave lead evaluations including Department of Agriculture's forecasting and insurance programs and Department of Defense programs. He interfaced with congressional staff and made significant contributions to GAO Kansas City's technical assistance team. His career resulted in substantial budgetary savings and management improvements.
Dave raised his two children in Prairie Village with his first wife Judy Armstrong. He worked to improve the community through a group that saved Indian Hills Middle School plus Tax Payers of Johnson County sewer district reform effort. He was active with his children's sports teams, boy scouts, and gardening. He left a legacy of trees and perennial flowers throughout Johnson County. In 1999, Dave married Susan Burford and became step-father to Susan's two adult children.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include wife Susan Solenberger of Overland Park, Kansas; son Daniel Solenberger and wife Carol of Prairie Village, Kansas; daughter Susan McCall and husband Robert McCall of Missouri City, Texas; stepdaughter Katie Burford and husband Josh Stephenson of Durango, Colorado; and stepson John Burford of Seattle, Washington; grandchildren Reagan Solenberger, Landon Solenberger, Robert McCall III, and Emmett David McCall.
