Rob Staples

June 20, 1929 — May 19, 2015

Rob L. Staples passed to his heavenly home on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Funeral service will be on Sunday, May 24 at Overland Park Church of the Nazarene at 3:30 p.m.  Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m. in the same venue.

Rob was born June 20, 1929 in Kirksey, Kentucky.  He is survived by Marcella, his wife of nearly 64 years, two daughters and their spouses, Karen and Louis Gelling and Lynda and Jerry Cohagan, and four grandchildren: Andrea Ferrell, Ryan Ferrell, Chase Cohagan, and Victoria Cohagan.

Rob had a distinguished career as a theologian in the Church of the Nazarene.  After earning an M. Div. degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary, he pastored in California from 1954 to 1963. After receiving a doctorate in Theology from Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California in 1963, he taught in the Religion Department of Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma from 1963 to 1976 and at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri from 1976 to 1998.

Rob published three books, Outward Sign and Inward Grace: The Place of Sacraments in Wesleyan Theology (1991), The Church Out On a Limerick (2000), and Words of Faith: An Easy Reference to Theological Terms (2001).  He published numerous articles on theology and was active in scholarly organizations throughout his career.
He will be remembered as a Godly man of deep thought and contagious humor. He loved to laugh and make other people laugh, and he challenged thousands of students through the years to think in creative and progressive ways.

Two scholarship funds have been established in Rob’s honor.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions could be made to either of the following scholarships: Rob L. Staples Scholarship Fund, Nazarene Theological Seminary, 1700 East Meyer Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64131 (816-333-6254) or Rob L. Staples Scholarship Fund, Trevecca Nazarene University, 333 Murfreesboro Road, Nashville, TN 37210.
