ROBERT WADE ALTLAND
Robert W. Altland, LTC U.S. Army (Ret.), 81, of Overland Park, died December 25, 2013. Visitation will be at 8:30 am followed by funeral service at 9:00 am, Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Newcomer's Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. Interment will follow at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Robert was born in Woodward, OK to Wesley Paul and Ruth Altland. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M, served in Korea and was a Vietnam veteran, having serving our country as a Combat Infantryman and Army Ranger for 22 years. He had many tours around the world including assignments at the Pentagon along with teaching and staff assignments at the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth. After retiring to Manhattan, Kansas he and his wife, Polly, opened a Small Engine Repair shop, which they operated for a number of years. After her death in 2007, he moved to Tallgrass Retirement Community, and enjoyed the friendships he made there.
He took pleasure in oil painting and completed many beautiful works. He loved being "Papa" to eleven grandchildren and "Great grand- Papa" to three great grandchildren. He was also a member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by his children, Steve Altland and his wife, Janice, of Muncie, IN, Susan Rolin and her husband John, of Morgan Hill, CA, Rob Altland and his wife Kelly, of Ashburn, VA, and Sandra Priest and her husband Bob, of Stilwell, KS, and grandchildren, Heather Schaefer, Kate Hamlin, Kristen Gillenwater, Greg Rolin, Krista Altland, Rob Priest, Kimberly Rolin, Jenna Priest, Emily Priest and Shannon Altland.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Polly, and his grandsons Michael Cox and Patrick Altland.
He was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
