Mr. Robert Brown

December 1, 1934 — July 22, 2013

Robert James Brown of Leawood, KS passed away peacefully on June 22, 2013. He was born in Guthrie, OK, on Dec.1, 1934 to Earl and Theresa Brown. He grew up in Pittsburg, KS. He then graduated in 1952 from St. Mary High School in Pittsburg, KS. After graduation from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and served in the 1st Infantry Armor Tank Division (The Big Red One) of the U. S. Army. He then went to flight school at Fort Rucker, AL. After flight school he received his Juris Doctor degree from Washburn University in Topeka in 1965. He began his professional career as an attorney, but he was not to be confined to a courtroom long and soon transitioned to a lifelong career as an airline pilot for Trans World Airline. He retired from TWA as a Captain in 1991. Though he will generally be remembered for his repertoire of jokes and the great gift of storytelling, Robert will be forever remembered for so much more. His family will remember him most for his generosity toward a cause, his penchant toward unlikely pets, his ability to fix almost nothing, his knack for finding missing library books, or the way he cleaned a pheasant. Some of his interests in his earlier years included listening to music and playing the saxophone, fishing, playing tennis, hunting, traveling with his family.

His passions later also included an avid interest in politics. It will be all of the littlest things that made him the man we will remember today and forever more. Humor was his preferred medicine. He used it often and effortlessly.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Violeta O. Brown, his two daughters, Mimi Taylor and Christina Gassen and their families, Daniel Taylor, Orion Taylor, Christian Taylor, Leger Taylor, Chad Gassen, Burke Gassen and Quinn Gassen. Sisters are Sue Kruise of Littleton, CO, Mary Ann Brown of Littleton, CO; nephews Phillip Lenski and family of Columbia, S.C., Dr. Noel Lenski and family of Boulder, CO, and Damon Lenski of Longmont, CO. Cousins Verla Brown of Bellevue, NE., Karla Zima of Mead, NE, and Kent Brown of Johnson Lake, NE. He will be missed dearly as we listen to one of his favorite bands, the Ink Spots.

Rosary will be Friday July 26, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel, 143rd and Nall, Leawood, KS, followed by Visitation from 6-8 p.m. Memorial mass will be Saturday July 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael. Reception will follow after mass in Porter Hall.
