Robert Cave Buckner
Robert Cave Buckner, MD passed away August 31, 2012 after a short illness. He was born on March 16, 1916 to Jacob Maddox Buckner and Margaret Harrison Cave Buckner on the family farm in Mexico, MO. When he was five, he was joined by a brother, Edwin Maddox Buckner. Robert started school at the Eller School on the Buckner property, Audrain County, MO. He then attended Mexico MO. High School and graduated in 1933. He played varsity football as fullback and was team captain. He injured his knee in an unrelated football incident that required an extensive hospital stay. During this stay he became interested in medicine.
Bob continued his education and family tradition by joining Beta Theta Phi fraternity at Westminster College in Fulton, MO, graduating in 1937. He graduated from the two year medical school at the University of Missouri in 1939 and went on to Washington University, St. Louis, MO Medical School where he graduated in 1941. He completed an internship at Kansas City's General Hospital in 1942 and was immediately commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was stationed at Camp White in Medford, OR.
During his tenure at Missouri University, he met Jean Hamilton of Shreveport, LA. Jean and Bob were married March 13, 1943, in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Buckner attained the rank of Major and was a Regimental Surgeon of the 362nd Regiment, 91st Infantry Division and was sent overseas to Oran, North Africa and then to Naples, Italy. His division spent the winter in the Apennines Mountains in northern Italy. When the war in Europe ended, he was discharged at Jefferson Barracks, Saint Louis, MO, in August 1946.
Dr. Buckner started his residency August 1, 1946, at Kansas City General Hospital and completed two years in pathology and two years in obstetrics and gynecology before entering private practice in North Kansas City, MO, in November 1950.
In 1950, Dr. Buckner completed the Basic Sciences Certification at University of Wisconsin. After completing the requirements of The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology on May 4, 1953, he became a Board Fellow on August 16, 1954. In 1955, He joined the practice of Joseph Webster, MD and Kermit Knoch, MD. In 1965, James P. Youngblood joined the practice, and the practice continued to expand with the addition of other doctors.
He delivered numerous babies at Queen of the World Hospital, St. Joseph, St. Mary's and Trinity Lutheran Hospitals in Kansas City. He also donated his time to several local clinics providing obstetrics and gynecology services where needed.
In addition to his dedication to his profession, he loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting game birds. His favorite story was of shooting his first quail at age 8. He also enjoyed trout fishing and salt water fly fishing. In pursuit of his sporting loves, he traveled the world hunting and fishing. Although he traveled to Scotland and other countries in the United Kingdom, his favorite hunting trip was his annual trek to Canada with his long-time hunting buddies where game birds were the fare of the day.
He loved to tell stores of his hunting trips and his life on the family farm in Mexico, MO. Bob and Jean enjoyed entertaining at their home in Leawood, KS. They lived in their dream house from 1957 to 1992 when they relocated to Corinth Downs.
Dr. Buckner retired from the practice of medicine in 1985. After retirement, he spent much of his time at the family farm and pursuing his interests in wildlife preservation. He was a member of Village Presbyterian Church
Dr. Buckner was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, his son Robert Hamilton Buckner and his precious granddaughter Erin Hamilton Buckner. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean; his daughter Carroll Buckner McKenna, and her spouse Terry; his son Jacob Maddox Buckner II and his spouse Jan; his daughter-in-law, Cathy Buckner; his 7 grandchildren, Robert Oliver Houston, Holly Houston Jones, Bonnie Houston Loyd, Robert Bradford Buckner, Margaret Jean Buckner Stadler, Annabelle Buckner Allen, and Kelly Buckner Fox; 12 great grandchildren; and his sister-in-law Virginia Buckner and her children and grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 4 – 5 pm Friday, September 7, 2012 with service to follow at 5 pm at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel. He will be interred near his family home in Auxvasse, MO.
