Robert Allen Chandler died in the afternoon of April 4th at the age of 82. Allen was a native of Jonesboro, Arkansas.
He was the sixth child born to Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Collins Chandler. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corp serving as a medic. He was stationed in Japan. After the war he attended the University of Arkansas, where he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees. After graduating, he moved to Kansas City, where he completed his internship and residencies at General Hospital. During his surgical residency, he specialized in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. He was a clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Missouri with appointments to General Hospital, Truman Medical Center, St. Mary's, Menorah, Research and Children's Mercy Hospital. He wrote multiple publications and received many awards. He received a special award from Children's Mercy Hospital for dedicated service to the children of greater Kansas City. Among some of his other accomplishments were, he was a past President of the Missouri Chapter of the American Medical Association. He also trained many other plastic surgeons that will carry on his legacy. Allen was a true artist, who was loved by his patients and loved his life's work. While in his residency, he met a beautiful nurse, Margaret Ann Milligan. Allen and Ann were married for 50 wonderful years. They had four children, Paula, Scott, Leigh and Elizabeth. Allen and his wife loved to travel and were world- wide travelers. Some of their travels included trips to Europe, Asia and the Galapagos Islands. Allen had many passions; he loved Jazz, deep sea fishing and was an avid collector. They also enjoyed hanging out with their children and grandchildren at their house at The Lake of the Ozarks and later at a second home in Sarasota, Florida.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, three sisters and two of his children, Scott Chandler and Paula Nichols. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Winlaw of Leawood, Kan., and Frances Leigh Chandler of Las Vegas, Nev., and grandchildren Angela True, Anna Hagelman, Eric Hagelman, Chloe Winlaw and Cody Winlaw, and great grandchildren Brandon True and Alexa True. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, countless friends and colleagues, too many to name. You will be missed by all whose lives you touched. Goodbye Dad, goodbye Pa, goodbye Doc, the love of your life awaits you.
A memorial service will be held at Unity Church on the Plaza, on April 19, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations could be sent to Children Mercy Hospital in his name.
