Robert Lee Ferdig, age 95, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at St. Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas.
Bob was born June 5, 1923 in rural Mapleton, Iowa. He was the last of 10 children born to Harry and Cora (Hessig) Ferdig. He grew up hunting in the hills around his hometown of Mapleton. Bob joined the Army during WWII where he served in the Philippines. After the war, he married Hazel Conner in Kansas City in February, 1946. Bob and Hazel came back to Iowa and lived in Kiron & Odebolt where they owned & operated the Kiron & Odebolt Lockers for many years. He was widely known as an expert at his trade.
In 1977 they retired to Sparta, Missouri where he raised hogs & cattle. They moved to Louisburg, Kansas in 1996 where he enjoyed working in his large garden. In 2010, they made their final move to Silvercrest at Deer Creek Retirement Community in Overland Park, Kansas, where they enjoyed true retirement living.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and son-in-law, Dr. Dennis Carrier.
Bob is survived by his wife of 72 years, Hazel of Overland Park; son, Bob A. Ferdig, and wife, Kathy, of Olathe, Kansas; daughter, Jane Carrier of Greenville, Texas; grandchildren: Dr. Brad Carrier of Greenville, Texas; Jud Ferdig of Shawnee, Kansas; Dr. Jennifer McWhorter and husband, Matthew, of Greenville, Texas; Kerri Miller of Olathe, Kansas; 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.
