Robert L Fisher, 90, of Olathe, Kansas (formerly of Overland Park) passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel at 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
Bob was born in Mt. Vernon, Illinois on October 29, 1922. He was one of 15 children of Alonzo and Sylvia (Lovin) Fisher. Bob married Helen Dooley on February 28, 1948. Bob and Helen had four sons. They later divorced. Bob married Jean Goldsmith on May 30, 1986.
Bob was a humble man, but a hero to many who knew him. Bob was one of the "Fighting Fishers" of Mt. Vernon, IL. All eight brothers served their country in time of war. Five of the brothers fought in WWII. Three survived. Bob served his country as an Aviation Machinist's Mate in the United States Navy, flying 50 missions in the Pacific. After the death of his brothers Charles and Edward within two weeks in 1945, he was sent back to the States. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and Gold Stars in lieu of Second and Third Air Medals.
Bob worked for AT&T for 44 years. He began by climbing telephone poles and retired from Construction Engineering in 1986. Bob enjoyed the outdoors including gardening, tennis and golf. He could grow, build, fix or do anything he set his mind to. Bob was an avid sailor. He and Jean and their grandkids enjoyed many days of sailing on the "Fancy Free" at Lake Perry. He was a member of American Legion Post 370, Telephone Pioneers, Overland Park Racquet Club, Midtown Athletic Club and Village Presbyterian Church.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; four sisters; and two sons, James Wesley Fisher and Kevin Scott Fisher.
Bob is survived by his wife, Jean Fisher; two brothers, Donald Fisher and Jack Fisher of Mt. Vernon, IL; three sisters, Maxine Badgett of Mt. Vernon, IL, Mildred Hall of St. Louis, MO and Joann Fisher Granite City, IL; two sons, Dan Fisher (Lisa) of Lenexa, Jack Fisher (Linda) of Olathe; two step-daughters, Linda McBeth (Jeff) of Mankato, MN, Jennifer Ho, Topeka; eight grandchildren, Anthony Madrid of Providence, RI, Daniel Madrid (Cathy) of Overland Park, Kevin McBeth of Woodbury, MN, Kyle Fisher of Overland Park, Melissa McBeth of Topeka, Allison Ho, Sam Ho and Sydney Ho all of Topeka; and one great-grandchild Samuel Madrid.
