Robert Charles Hyde, 72, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on August 21st in Olathe, Kansas. Robert was born on March 17, 1945, in Lawrence, Kansas, to Francis Elmer Hyde and Juanita Hyde. Robert spent his childhood in Atchison, Kansas, where he attended elementary, middle and high school. Robert graduated from Atchison High School in 1963. Robert developed his love of astronomy during his childhood in Atchison.
Robert attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, before transferring to the University of Kansas. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy in December of 1967. He took a job at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas. Robert met his wife, Christine Moon Crawford, in March of 1969 while she was completing her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy. They were married in September of 1969 at the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas.
Robert and Christine moved to Chillicothe, Missouri, in 1970 to pursue an opportunity to help establish a Physical Therapy program at Hedrick Medical Center. Robert was the Director of Physical Therapy at Hedrick Medical Center until 1989. They had five children while living in Chillicothe. It was also during this time that they became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Robert held various positions within the church over the years.
In 1989 the Hyde Family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where Robert was the Director of Rehabilitation Services at Bethania Regional Health Care Center. The family moved to Olathe, Kansas, in 1995. He worked for several Rehabilitation companies in the Kansas City area prior to his retirement in 2014.
Robert kept busy during his retirement. He was a temple worker at the Kansas City Missouri LDS Temple. He also worked as a volunteer at the Bishop’s Storehouse in Independence, Missouri and was part of the Kansas Brass Bell Choir. One of Robert’s passions that he shared with Christine was his love of genealogy. The Hyde children can testify that each family trip during their childhood included trips to find remote and forgotten cemeteries as well hours many hours sitting in County Courthouses searching for information about their ancestors.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Christine and his parents.
Robert leaves behind a son, Eric Hyde (Sarah), Basehor; and daughters Angela Knight (Scott), Olathe; Emily Romo (Scott), Gardner; Laura Ismert (Brian), Topeka; Gina Sweeney, Shawnee; a mother-in-law Gloria Crawford, Prairie Village; a sister-in-law Sharman O’Grady (Pat), Shawnee; a brother-in-law Scott Crawford (Johnie) Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and 17 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel located at 11200 Metcalf Avenue on Thursday August 24th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Another visitation will be held before the 10:00 a.m. funeral on Friday August 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 15915 W 143rd Street in Olathe, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association to further the effort to find a cure for diabetes.
