Robert Lee Wright, 85, of Lakeview Village in Lenexa, Kansas, passed away peacefully from Lymphoma cancer on March 25, 2010. Born Oct 16, 1924 in Minden, Nebraska to Merlin and Hansine (Lund) Wright.
He attended the Minden school system until 1940 when he moved to Lexington, Nebraska. After graduating from Lexington High School in 1942 he attended the University of Nebraska until May 1943 when he was inducted into the Army.
He served his country during WWII with the Army 66th Panther Division. After sometime in Quartermaster Corp he attended the University of Wyoming from August 1943 to February 1944 in the Army Specialized Training Program. When the program was discontinued he was moved to the 66th Infantry Division in Alabama where he became a truck driver in the Anti-tank Platoon, Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 263 Regiment. The 66 Division served time in northwest France until VE Day then moved to Marseille for 6 months. In November 1945 he joined the 42nd Rainbow Division in Austria for occupation duty. Part of the time he attended the Division’s Rainbow University in Zell-Am-Zee, Austria.
In April 1946 after discharge from the Army, he started working for his step-father, J.H. (Bun) Slack and his mother at Slack’s Electric Service in Minden, Nebraska. He worked here in the summers and attended the University of Nebraska during the school years.
Robert graduated from the University of Nebraska, June 1949 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
On June 12, 1949 he married Arlene M. Petersen in Minden, Nebraska. Moved to Kansas City, Missouri and started July 1, 1949 at Kansas City Power & Light Co, where he retired in 1988 after 39 years.
He volunteered 8 years with Habitat for Humanity in Kansas City, Kansas starting in 1998. He got his Master Electrician License so he could do the electrical wiring in these houses.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village, Kansas since 1954.
Robert & Arlene celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in June 2009.
Our family enjoyed many camping trips. Many great memories will be cherished forever and he will be greatly missed.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents J.H. and Hansine Slack of Minden, Nebraska.
Survivors include his wife Arlene, daughter Patricia & Roy Bilyk of Overland Park, Kansas, son William & Santhanee of Pueblo West, Colorado, and 2 grandsons Christopher & Matthew Bilyk. Half brother Ross & Carol Wright of Minden, Nebraska. Also many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends.
Funeral services will be at D.W Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf in Overland Park, Kansas on Saturday April 3, 2010. Visitation at 1 pm and Service at 2 pm. Interment immediately following in Johnson County Memorial Gardens Indoor Mausoleum. Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.johnsoncountychapel.com. An informal gathering for friends and family will be from 4 pm – 6 pm at Lakeview Village Southridge at the Tree Top Room on 5th Floor (14001 West 92 Street, Lenexa, Kansas 66215).
