Robert (Bob) McVay, 89, of Kansas City, MO, passed way July 21, 2009. Bob graduated from Paseo H.S. in 1939, after which he joined the Navy. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer at the age of 21. He was stationed on the ship Whitney on Dec. 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. During the 1990's he entertained with The Debonaires' tap dance group. For six years he worked with AARP assembling Braille books.
Bob is survived by his brother Bill R. McVay and his wife Ruth Ann McVay; daughter Barbara Lee Johnson, grandchildren Jacki (Johnson) Wasinger with two great grandsons; Michael Jess Johnson II with two great grand daughters; step-daughter Cheryl Lynn Barnes and her husband John Barnes, grandchildren Jennifer Wolf and Amy Lopez with two great grandsons; 21-year partner Marvales Stannard, her daughter Sandy Swank, her son Larry Stannard, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m., in D.W. Newcomer's Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Robert J. McVay Fund, 6709 W. 119th , Box 438, Overland Park, KS 66209. Contributions and donations at the service will be used for the care givers and nurses of Unit B at the Missouri Veterans' Home in Warrensburg, MO, in recognition of their loving and extraordinary care of Bob these last two years.
