Robert M. “Bob” Sloan (1930-2017)
Bob Sloan passed away peacefully and gracefully on January 16. Bob was born in 1930, in Kansas City. He graduated from Paseo High School in 1948 and from the University of Missouri in 1953, with a civil engineering degree and as a Sigma Chi Fraternity member. After active duty service as a U.S. Air Force lieutenant, Bob joined the engineering firm now known as HNTB, retiring 41 years later as an HNTB Vice President and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. During his career Bob designed highways and airfields across the country, including runways at over 20 major U.S. civilian and military airports.
Bob met his future wife Katie while at Paseo, and they began dating at M.U. What ensued was a marriage with an absolute devotion deeply admired by all who have known them. After raising their three children, Katie and Bob became owners of Noel’s Gifts and Interiors. Bob happily did the books, built displays, and delivered furniture in the evenings and on weekends, and full-time once retired from HNTB.
Bob had a talent for innovative home design. He planned five wonderful houses for his family over the years, along with creating and building brick patios and backyard structures. And once retired from HNTB, Bob did home concept/remodeling plans for over 100 clients across Kansas City.
Above all, Bob was known for his sense of humor and irrepressible, positive attitude. His greatest desire was to get people to smile, laugh, and be happier than before.
Bob was a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend, lived a full and rewarding life, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Bob is survived by his wife Kathryn (Katie) Sloan; his daughter Susan; his son Jeff Sloan and wife Ruby; his son Peter Sloan, wife Laura, and their children Curry, Kellyn, and Riley Sloan; niece Jane Meacham; nephew David Meacham and wife Sharon, and many cherished family members and friends. The family thanks the amazing caretakers at Village Shalom Memory Care, Mary Gray, and Menorah Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 23, in the Wesley Chapel at Church of the Resurrection United Methodist Church, 13720 Roe Ave., with a private burial service afterwards for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Child Protection Center in Kansas City, or to The Barstow School.
