Roberta Schumacher, 82, passed away on June 24, 2007 after a 2-year battle with lung cancer.
She was born to Edgar and Mae Horton, September 23, 1924 in Greentop, MO. Her family moved to Kirksville, MO while she was still an infant. She graduated from Kirksville High School in 1942 and completed a year at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. She moved to Kansas City in the early 1940's and was employed as the Secretary to the Chief Engineer of the Vendo Company. She met her future husband and the love of her life, Warner Schumacher at Vendo. They married on February 14, 1946. After marriage, she worked for several more years until the birth of her daughter. She became a homemaker with brief stints as a Secretary for the YMCA and Mutual of New York. She was thrilled to become a grandmother with the birth of Henry and Lily. Grammy Bert was a fixture in her grandchildren's lives. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, an active member of the Debrouh Circle and a dedicated volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Roberta is survived by her daughter, Janet Bash and her son-in-law Tom and by her two grandchildren, Henry and Lily, Leawood, KS; a sister, Rita Whitley and her family; Harding Schumacher, a brother-in-law of Raytown, MO and his family and Louise Horton, her sister-inlaw of Ruidoso, New Mexico and her family. Contributions should be to the Bethany Foundation Fund or the American Cancer Society.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church at 2101 Lamar. Burial will be at St. Paul's Cemetery in Concordia, MO at 3 p.m. Thursday.
