After living life to the fullest, Robert “Bob” Herring, 91, Overland Park, KS, passed away June 3 with his family and loving wife of 64 years, Diane, by his side. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 25 at 11am at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS.
Bob was born April 10, 1925 in Kansas City, MO to Elmer Herring and Ida Opal Sweet Herring. He was the youngest of three brothers. At the age of two he went to live with his maternal grandparents, Theodore Brown Sweet and wife Annie. At age six he was placed in the Gillis Orphans home where he attended the Hale H. Cook elementary school and the Paseo High School. Upon graduation in 1942 he joined the Navy where he served three years as a combat air crewman. Upon leaving the service he attended the University of Missouri where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Bob and Diane raised their sons in Wichita, KS where Bob worked in the real estate and building business. In 1985 they started a new company, Advance Forms and Supplies, LTD. which is still doing business today. Following their sons, they moved back to this area in 1992.
Bob leaves his three sons and their wives, Mark and Susan Herring, Paul and Nancy Herring, and Christopher and Tonette Herring; seven grandchildren, Chelsea, Cale, Brandon, Alex, Marissa, Rachel, and John Paul; and six great grandchildren.
He should be remembered as a man who loved his wife and family.
He has requested his remains be donated to the University of Kansas Medical School and that in
lieu of flowers donations be made to the Society of Humanists, 1777 T Street, NW Washington, DC 20009.
