Rosa Marie Barber passed away on April 2, 2008, at the age of 82, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Rosa was a lifelong resident of the Kansas City area, born on March 15, 1926, of Sicilian immigrants. Her maiden name was Vazzano. She graduated from Manual High and Vocational School and worked at Hall Brothers, the first of many interesting life experiences. At Hall Brothers (now Hallmark) she met her husband Bill, and was married in 1948. They lived in Overland Park, Kan., in a home Bill designed and constructed. Together they raised three children: Bill, Kathy and Teresa. After raising her family, Rosa worked in the food service industry and then at Branded Emblem in Overland Park, where she retired in 1990.
For many years Rosa had a clothes ironing business that she operated out of the home until the late 1990s and had an outstanding reputation for her meticulous work. Her husband Bill passed away far too soon at the age of 57 in 1985, and Rosa never remarried.
Rosa has much to be proud of during her life: a long marriage, three successful children, many close friends and caring relatives. She cared for her mother Catherine in the last days of life.
She was a devout Catholic and she tread lightly on the Earth. She also delivered meals on wheels. Rosa practiced a frugal lifestyle, never drove a car and she loved to walk everywhere. She had a special relationship with her grandchildren: Ed Jr., Lora, Melissa, Scott, Keith, Rachel, David, Angela, Joanna, and Derek, and great grandchildren Alyssa, Rosa and Elijah. She warmly welcomed Ed Pinkelman, Billy Marshall, Janet Barber, Randy Neumann, Josiah Gbekpa and Michelle Royals into the family. Rosa began showing symptoms of Alzheimer's in the late 1990s and was lovingly cared for by her daughters Kathy Pinkelman and Teresa Marshall in their homes during the last decade of her life. She is also survived by her sisters Ida Rugenstein, Mary Hannan and Clara Stegmaier in the Kansas City area.
A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2008, at D. W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf in Overland Park, Kan. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at the above location. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
