Dec. 11, 1922-Feb. 1, 2008 Ross E. Burns, Jr., 85, of Olathe, Kansas died on February 1, 2008 at Overland Park Regional Hospital. He was 85 years old.
Ross was born on December 11, 1922 to Ross and Gertrude (Betty) Burns in Miami, Oklahoma. He grew up in Joplin, Missouri and graduated from the University of Missouri. He played center for the Joplin High School basketball team which won the Missouri State High School Championship. He attended the University of Missouri, playing basketball until World War II interrupted his college career. He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. He and Margaret Bull were married in Joplin and later moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where they raised their three children. Ross sang in the Village Presbyterian Church choir for many years and was an active member of the church. He was an avid tennis player and enjoyed golf in his later years. Professionally, he owned and operated A.E. West Petroleum Co., a regional oil distributorship. He and his wife, Margaret, enjoyed traveling worldwide, both before and after their retirement. For several years, he was the loving caretaker of his wife, who had Alzheimer's disease. Ross was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey, and his wife, Margaret. He is survived by his daughters, Rebecca and Marsha and their families.
