Rowland Powell

Rowland Paul “Bud” Powell, 88, passed away on August 6, 2010 with his loving family by his side. He was born in St. Louis on November 7, 1921. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII as a flight instructor at various bases in Texas. He married Marian Breitenbach on November 7, 1943. After the war he worked for TWA as a pilot for 31 years and retired in 1978.

Bud was a member of Village Presbyterian Church, Leawood Lions Club, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Abdallah Shriners, TWA Senior and Senior Lakers, Combat Pilots Association, Save-A-“Connie” Organization, and other civic organizations. His interests in genealogy were well-known in the area and his meticulous records were donated to the Johnson County Library.

He was a dedicated family man who coached Little League baseball and YMCA softball. He loved his time spent at the Lake of the Ozarks. He was an avid gardener and a Mister Fixit. Bud loved animals – especially Boston Terriers. His sense of humor was legendary, and his mischievous antics will truly be missed by family and friends.

Bud is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marian Powell; son, David Powell and daughter-in-law, Connie of Lenexa; daughter Sandra Francis and son-in-law Andrew of Houston, Texas; daughter Janice Kelley and son-in-law, David of Marietta, Georgia. He also leaves six grandchildren, Heath Powell, Scott Powell, Bryan Lee and wife Tanya, Nancy Lee Dowd and husband Darin, Caroline Kelley and Christopher Kelley, as well as six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 10th at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208. Burial in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Overland Park, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, August 9th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Village Presbyterian Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
