Roy W. Asbury, 92, of Olathe, KS, passed away on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at home of natural causes surrounded by family members.
Born in Rantoul, KS, on August 6, 1920, Roy was such a talented athlete that, in his youth, he was proud to be the only youth player on a men's semi-pro baseball team.
Roy was a WWII Veteran who attained the rank of Major in the U.S. Army. Roy was in the Normandy Campaign, Omaha Beach Invasion, and was an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Officer. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, served in Europe through V-E Day and, received a Battlefield commission to 1st Lt.
After retiring from the military, Roy who was a life-long golfer, along with two partners, designed and built an 18-hole golf course in Olathe, KS.
When stationed in England, Roy entered a newspaper contest to play a round of golf the same day Ben Hogan played in the British Open. Roy's handicap score beat Ben Hogan's score.
After he retired from the military, Roy worked as a civilian advisor to the Army for 15 years at Ft. Leavenworth. After that, he volunteered as an orderly at Olathe Medial Center for many years.
Roy, who was a child of the great depression, believed that hard work was the secret of success. No matter what enterprise, he was there, every day. He was the first to arrive, and the last to leave, always.
Roy was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rose, and his children Dennis, Joyce, Donald and Dustin, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary scheduled at 7:30 pm Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, 900 S. Honeysuckle Dr, Olathe, KS. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
