Ruth L. Elo, 90, formerly of Ottawa, KS passed away peacefully on April 1st, at the Kansas City Hospice House. She was born April 26th, 1922 in Halls, MO, the daughter of Landon C. and Lena M. McCoy. She was preceded in death by her husband George Elo Jr., a daughter Deborah Lynn Elo and sisters Lavena Wilson, Esther Gibson, Alice Lapaglia, Hyla McCoy, and Landon McCoy Jr.
Ruth grew up on a farm in Halls, MO and graduated from Benton High School in St. Joseph MO. She was a member of Halls Baptist Church in Halls, MO where in her youth she played the piano for the service many Sundays. Ruth had a God given talent of playing the piano by ear, she could hear a song and within no time she was playing it. Playing the piano throughout her life brought her great joy. Ruth also enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching game shows and playing cards with her family.
Ruth and George were united in marriage on September 14th, 1942. They lived in St. Joseph, MO until moving to Columbus, IN, and later returning to this area. Ruth retired from Fasco in Sedalia, MO. After her husband George passed away she relocated to Overland Park, KS to be closer to her children. She worked as a greeter for Price Chopper for several years, and then later moved to Ottawa, KS. Ruth continued on as a greeter at Wal-Mart, where she enjoyed working with the public. In her later years Ruth moved back to Overland Park, KS in assisted living.
Ruth is survived by three sisters, Betty Masters and husband Don, Gallatin, MO, Shirley Brown, St. Joseph, MO, Patty Smart and husband Doug, Atchison, KS, five children, Sherry Cox and husband Larry, Ottawa, KS, Roseann Lytle, Paola, KS, George S. Elo and Karen, Kansas City, KS, Kathy Goodman and husband Jake, Overland Park, KS, Randy Elo and Teresa, Warsaw, MO, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, many nieces, nephews and friends.
A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday, April 4th, 2013 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS 66210. Graveside service will be at 10 am on Friday, April 5th at Sugar Creek Cemetery, St. Joseph, MO. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, Mo., 6414, money donations being sent to the location at 9221 Ward Parkway, Suite 100, Kansas City, MO 64114.
