Rudy Richardson, Sr., age 84, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009 at Garden Terrace Nursing Home. During his life he was surrounded by his loving family and wonderful friends. A celebration of Rudy’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 27th at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Entombment will be in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Courtyard of Memories Mausoleum. A gathering of family and friends will be held 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Monday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Rudy’s name be made to your favorite Veterans or Children’s charity. Rudy was born and raised in Westport, Missouri. He was the 6th born in a family of 10 children. He served 29 months in the U.S. Army as a tank driver in Northern Africa, and a combat medic in Italy and Germany during World War II. He received numerous decorations including five Bronze Stars, Combat Medic Badge, and the Silver Star for bravery. On June 6, 1942, he married Ramona Ruth Reinke, and in 1943 they had one son, Rudy Jr. In 1951, they moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where Rudy and Ramona lived the rest of their lives. Rudy Sr. had many jobs over the years including a Dy-Dee-Wash diaper service delivery man, Tobin Construction, and a plumbing warehouse foreman, but he retired from Unitog Uniform in 1985. He was also a proud member of the American Legion, Dwight Cowles Post #370, for over 60 years.
Anyone that knew Rudy knew that he always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. He was a hard working and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Ramona; siblings, baby boy Richardson, William Richardson, Caswell Richardson, Katherine Richardson, Julia Richardson Hood, and Llewelyn Richardson. Survivors include his son, Rudy Jr.; grandson, Rudy (Butch) Richardson, III, granddaughter, Angel Sanford; four great-grandchildren, Blake Richardson, Tanner Richardson, Brett Sanford, and Lauren Sanford; his siblings, Tom Richardson, Lilly Vernassie, Mary White, and Eugene Richardson.
