Sharon Kay Parsons slipped peacefully away to heaven May 15 after a brave and brief battle with liver cancer.
She was born Sharon Kay Slaven on June 25, 1935 in Beloit, Kansas to Buelah K. Dean Slaven and Max B. Slaven. She grew up in Cawker City, Kansas where she graduated from Cawker City High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1953. From there she went on to study nursing at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1956 as a Registered Nurse. Her compassion and love lead her into a career caring for others, and it was this career and her compassion that allowed her to meet the love her life and future husband , her one-time patient, Larry D. Parsons. The two were married on August 25, 1957 in Cawker City.
She continued her nursing career working in both hospital and office settings until the birth of her one and only child, daughter Michele Marie in 1973.
Over the years, Sharon became an avid traveler, always loving the idea of checking off new countries on her mental map of the world – at last count she had visited over 20 different countries. Cruising became one of her favorite ways to spend time with friends, family and loved ones while seeing the wonders of the world stretching from Alaska to the Mediterranean to Russia and back. As much as she loved travelling, those who knew her well, also knew that KU Jayhawk basketball came first. So much so, she and Larry moved closer to Lawrence so she could continue attending home games as a perennial season ticket holder.
While traveling and KU were always at the top of her list, they paled when it came to the greatest joy in her life – her grandkids. Born in 2005 and 2006 respectively, Greyson and Quinn are whom she was most proud. She always loved spending time with them and particularly enjoyed watching them play sports. She was always excited to get weekly updates from the kids on hockey, soccer, basketball and lacrosse games. Some of her favorite memories were of watching KU games on TV, snuggled up with the two of them.
She is preceded in death by her mother, father, sister Sondra Slaven, step-mother Mildred Slaven and her grandson Aydan Erim.
She is survived by her husband, daughter, brother Stanley Slaven, sister Shirley Mason and her grandchildren Greyson and Quinn Erim.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations to either The March of Dimes North Central Florida Chapter http://marchforbabies.org/SharonParsons-AydanErim or St. Luke’s College of Health Sciences Merlyn Y.
