Shirley W. Gordon, 94, of Overland Park, KS died April 6, 2023, at Brookdale Senior Living. A private memorial service will be held. Friends may pay their respects at her final place of rest beside her husband, Louis Gordon, and daughter, Jan Gordon, at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the New Haven Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Shirley was born December 6, 1928, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan to Carl and Julia Bishop. She graduated from Loma Linda University and became a Registered Nurse. Shirley also graduated from KU where she received her Bachelor of Science in Medical Record Administration and worked at St. Joseph Hospital doing appeal letters for the doctors.
Shirley loved being a Seventh Day Adventist and attended New Haven SDA Church. She considered her friends part of her family and was actively involved with church functions.
Shirley enjoyed taking long walks and being out in nature. Her hobby was gardening, and she enjoyed watching the flowers she planted bloom. Shirley’s favorite things were reading, playing games, putting puzzles together and she loved bird watching.
Shirley was extremely thoughtful, caring and giving. John Weaver shared this: “Anyone who knew her was blessed. When I first came into the church years ago, Shirley and Jan always made me feel loved. Not just welcome but loved and that’s a rare quality that they both shared. I do look forward to the day of our Lord’s coming and we are reunited with both of them. They were one of life’s treasures.”
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Jill Gordon and Traci Gordon, grandchildren, Aubri Matkin and Ben Matkin, and her great-grandchild, Lyric Matkin. Shirley was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Condolence may be left on Shirley’s online guestbook.
