Shirley Dell Gwin

Shirley Dell Gwin, 87, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on November 6, 2010. A visitation will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, November 12th, at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. A funeral service will be held immediately following at 12:00 P.M. also in the chapel. Shirley was born on August 14, 1923 in Kansas City, MO to Edna Smithers. At an early age, Shirley developed a passion for dancing. She performed professionally and taught dance for a number of years.

As a young woman Shirley began working at Katz drug store where she met the love of her life, Bill Gwin. Shirley and Bill were married on October 19, 1949 and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. All who knew Shirley knew how much she loved her family. The pride and joy of her life were her husband and four children. She loved them with an unconditional love and taught them to live as she did – to the fullest with enthusiasm and joy.

In their later years Shirley and Bill attended the Church of the Resurrection where Shirley served in various capacities but her favorite was as a church greeter. Shirley welcomed all with a big smile and a warm heart.

Shirley was the picture of grace, poise and dignity. She was generous and kind, full of love for family and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband Bill and their children Steve (Beverly), Terry, (Bonnie), Tim, (Angie) and Candice along with her grandchildren Andy (Candy), Steve (Patti), Kristie, Terry (Sam), Emily (Adam), Katy, Taylor and her great grandchildren Zackary, Thera and Isabella.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Kansas City Hospice House or the American Cancer Society.
