Shirley Magdalene (Hessler) Petring of Overland Park, KS passed away peacefully Monday, May 25, 2015. Born on December 25, 1927 to Charles and Kathryn Hessler of Belleville, IL Shirley always said the doctor didn’t want to come deliver her because he had just started eating his Christmas dinner. Shirley graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1946. She attended Washington University in St. Louis in 1947 and earned an Associate in Arts Degree at Township Junior College in Belleville in 1949. From 1949 to 1953 Shirley worked for the Air Force at Scott Air Force Base. She met Walter Petring at a church function in the winter of 1951 and they were married January 12, 1952. They raised their daughter in Florrisant, MO where they lived from 1958 to 2004 when they moved to Overland Park, KS to be closer to their two grandchildren. Shirley resided at Silvercrest of Overland Park in 2011 and Sunrise of Overland Park in 2013.
Shirley was a wife, mother, artist, seamstress, musician and world traveler. She was a sweet, caring and unassuming person who will be missed by many.
Mrs. Petring was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Walter Petring and her sister JoAnn Gintz. She is survived by her daughter Laurie (Chuck) Jarrett, her grandchildren Stacey (Wes) Martin and Daniel Jarrett, her sister Kathy (Norton) Zeid and many other family members. At her request Shirley has been cremated. A reception will be held at 11 AM followed by a memorial service at noon on Monday, June 8 at Johnson County Funeral Chapel.
