Stephen J. Cole, 66, passed away at Kansas City Hospice House, surrounded by his family. His pain and suffering finally ended after a long battle with cancer on May 20, 2016.
He was the first son of seven children born to Richard and Clara Cole. He was born in Tokyo, Japan while his father was in active duty serving in the United States Army.
Steve selflessly served the public his entire life. He achieved Eagle Scout and earned the God and Country Award. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Education. After college he went into the Army and later began his career with the Overland Park Police Department. He continued learning his entire life, graduating from the University of Louisville, School of Justice Administration and later he earned his Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Kansas, Edwards Campus.
He married his wife Debbie, of 41 years in 1975, and raised two children, Stephenie and Justin, with her. Throughout his career with the OPPD, he continued to excel and retired with the rank of Captain after 28 years of service.
Steve was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, his sisters Beth, Janice and his brother Scott.
Surviving in addition to his wife and two children, are his Son-in-law, Donald, daughter-in-law, Lauren, three grandchildren, Brittanie, Logan and Skylar, his sisters Mary, Terry and his brother Larry. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
His complete and total devotion was ingratiated upon his family. Everything he did in his everyday life was to better their lives. He was a compassionate and selfless man. He will be truly and greatly missed.
Friends and family are welcome to visitation on Monday, May 23rd, 2016 from 6-8pm at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66210. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, May 24th, 2016 at 1pm at the same location.
