Stephen “Steve” Yoakum, 74, passed away October 30, 2017. Visitation will be from 10:00 am -11:00 am Monday, November 6th, with services to follow at 11:00 am both held at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, KS 66210.
Steve attended Emporia State and was a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. After boot camp, he served honorably, made the rank of Sergeant and remained active for 7 years. Through the Marine Corps League, he found great joy in serving as a volunteer in the Toys for Tots charity program.
After a successful career in medical supply sales, he joined his father, Burt Alden Yoakum, founder of BAY Leather goods, as Operations Director. He served alongside his father in 1982 and remained active in business until the company's end in 2004.
Steve enjoyed soccer and spent many years as a referee for youth leagues in the KC metro area. He was a member of Kiwanis, an avid reader and passionate about running; completing his first marathon at age 60. He was a British car enthusiast, spending his spare time participating in shows and local club membership.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Burt and Virginia McIntire Yoakum. He is survived by his wife, Susan Yoakum; son, Jeff (Cindy) Yoakum of Wichita, Kansas; daughter, Kristin (Shannon) Friday of Edmond, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Sophie Yoakum; sister, Marlyn Neal and numerous nieces and nephews.
