Steven Fink

November 5, 1950 — April 29, 2017

Steve Fink brought joy to just about every interaction he had, bettering all who were lucky to know him. During the last year of his life he fought a courageous battle with brain cancer. He approached his cancer with the same steadfast optimism and quiet determination that he lived his life, even keeping his caregivers laughing with his quips.

Steve was born on November 5, 1950, in Kansas City. A Wildcat, he graduated from Kansas State University in 1974 with a bachelor’s of science and masters of science in business administration and journalism.

In 1984, he met Kathy and they married two years later, celebrating their 30th anniversary just days before Steve died in Kathy’s arms on April 29, 2017. Their family grew when Matthew was born in 1992 and again when Ryan was born in 1998. Steve was one of those men who are born to be a dad: loving, patient, kind, ready to listen and always ready with a one-liner. He gave his all to his family, supporting everyone through their medical challenges, playing Woody to Matt’s Buzz Lightyear, helping Ryan hone his quick wit and finely tuned sense of humor, but most of all passing along his kind, sweet disposition and unwavering optimism. Steve worked in agricultural advertising, which suited him well because of the industry’s wonderful sense of camaraderie and friendship. He spent the last decade of his career at Farm Journal Media.
Steve’s family would like to thank the team that helped Steve during the past 13 months, in particular:

• Dr. Salacz; Megan Daulton; Anna Harding; Dr. Chamoun; Dr. Coster; and Dr. Eickmeyer
• Rehab therapists and nurses at KU Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation and Mid-America Outpatient Rehabilitation
• Gail Mullin at Be Head Strong
• Steve’s friends and colleagues at Farm Journal Media
• All the anonymous donors to the GoFundMe account set up by Bob Brunker and Will Murphy

A service will be held in Steve’s honor at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017, at Asbury United Methodist Church. Remembrances will be shared after the service at a separate location. In honor of Steve’s fun-loving spirit, wear your favorite team attire or dress casually.

In addition to Kathy, Matt and Ryan, he is survived by his brother, Doug. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary Jean, and Kathy’s parents, John and Nancy North.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Be Head Strong or the Lee Ann Britain Infant Development Center.
