Steven Douglas Peine, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away at his home on Monday, December 26, 2016. He was 66 years old. He is survived by his parents, Milt and Norma Peine, his sister Linda (Will) Lewis and his two brothers: Jim (Cindy) Peine and Ron (Becky) Peine. He is also survived by two nieces, five nephews, and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Steve was born on August 22, 1950, in Batavia, Illinois. He was born with Down Syndrome and therefore attended a school for exceptional children in the Fox Valley area. In 1967, his family relocated to Overland Park and he continued to live at home until 1983 when he moved into a group home for people with similar, special needs. The home, run by Community Living Opportunities, was started in the early 1980’s and Steve was one of the first eight people to live in the same home where he died. CLO has served over 220 people in the area and employs close to 400 warm-hearted, caring people who’ve dedicated their professional life to helping out those who need the extra love. Steve’s life and every happiness would not have been possible if not for CLO employees, and for that his family is eternally grateful.
Life with special needs can be trying, but Steve never saw his journey through life as anything but joyous and fun, embracing each day with charm, his signature charisma, and an ornery sense of humor. He was active in the Special Olympics and loved bowling. He was also very particular and knew what he liked and disliked, often ordering people around to get him what he wanted. And even though this could be a little exhausting, his requests were always paired with his infectious, megawatt smile so many a milkshake, donut, Coke and cup of coffee were had in his 66 years.
Above all else, Steve loved the warmth of regular family and social gatherings, especially the holidays. He was a special gift from God, wise in so many ways, and will be truly, deeply missed but never, ever forgotten.
Services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Overland Park where Steve was a member on Thursday, December 29, 2016. Visitation will be held from 10-11 AM with services at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to CLO, PO Box 14395, Lenexa, Kansas, 66285.
