Sylvia Vandever Scherrer

Sylvia Marie Vandever Scherrer, age 79, of Lenexa, KS, died of Alzheimer’s disease on December 25, 2019. Visitation will be at 9:30 am on Tuesday, December 31, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 13615 W. 92nd St., Lenexa, KS 66215. The funeral will be at 10:30 am at the same location.

Sylvia was born on November 5, 1940, in Topeka, KS. She graduated from St. Teresa’s Academy in 1957 and the University of Kansas in 1961. At school, she made many long-time friends.

She married Kenneth C. Scherrer, Jr., in 1964. She was a devoted wife and supported Ken in his career interests. Together they owned a hardware store and later a furniture store where Sylvia kept the books and assisted customers.

Ken and Sylvia shared many interests. Over the years, they square-danced, played bridge, and traveled with many different groups of friends.

After selling their furniture business, Ken and Sylvia traveled to 49 out of 50 states and many foreign countries. They also made a yearly trip to Branson with their daughters and grandchildren.

They later retired to Lakeview Village. Sylvia spent several years in the health care unit. We are grateful to the many caregivers who treated her with extraordinary kindness when she was no longer able to take care of herself.

Sylvia is survived by her daughter Tera, and grandchildren David and Becca Dereberry; her daughter, Karen (Tim) Heinz, and grandchildren Jessi, Mathew and Nathan; and her daughter, Ilene (Quentin) Hurst, and grandchildren Garrhett, Cecily, Jack and Corey.

Sylvia tenaciously held onto life during a long, slow decline into Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to
