Tellus Eugene “Gene” Oakes, age 87, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on May 25, 2019, at home from Alzheimer’s Disease.
A visitation will be held from 9-10 AM, service 10 AM, on Tuesday, May 28, at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park, KS 66210.
Gene was born in Kansas City, Missouri, to Tellus George Oakes and Neva Jones Oakes. He attended Rollins School and graduated from Westport High School. After high school, he joined the Air Force, and served in Bordeaux, France, during the Korean War. During that time he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Burns Oakes. Upon his return to the Kansas City, he began his career at Business Men’s Assurance Company, and retired as Vice President, Reinsurance Underwriting, Brokerage.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Westport, active as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and served faithfully in many capacities down through the years. He treasured the lifelong friendships he made there.
He is preceded in death by his younger brother, James Edwin Oakes, his wife of 57 years, Ruth Oakes, his daughter Linda Oakes Wright, and his second wife, Juanita C. Oakes. He is survived by his children, Beverly Oakes, Gary and Jody Oakes, Bill Oakes, and Laura and Ken Tucker, twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
