Thelma (better known as “Teddy”) was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marshall P. Scott, in 2002. She graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where she earned her pilot’s license and later became a member of The Ninety Nines, Inc., an international organization of women pilots. The “99’s” was established in 1929 by 99 licensed women pilots for the support and advancement of women in aviation. Amelia Earhart served as the organization’s first president. Teddy also attended Southwestern University in Memphis and was a member and chapter advisor for the Delta, Delta, Delta sorority.
Teddy and Marshall were married for 54 years and lived in Memphis, Tennessee; Rocky Mount, North Carolina; and lastly in Overland Park, Kansas. Teddy was an avid tennis player and enjoyed college basketball, cheering for her two favorite teams, the Kansas Jayhawks and the Tar Heels, UNC-Chapel Hill. In previous years she enjoyed being a “snowbird” and staying at her condo in Hollywood, Florida. Teddy was the life of the party and her strength of character took her through many trials and tribulations. She was devoted to family and loved her “tennis buddies” and the cats that graced her home.
Teddy is survived by two daughters, Peggy Olsen of Sarasota, Florida, and Jeanne Anderson of Overland Park, Kansas; sons Marshall P. Scott, Jr. of Overland Park, and John F. Scott of Olathe, Kansas; son-in-law Mark W. Anderson; daughters-in-law Carol Tate Scott and Victoria King Scott; grandsons Steven L. Anderson, Graham S. Anderson, Fletcher M. Scott and John S. C. Scott; one sister, Dale Parker of Memphis, Tennessee and her family.
The family is very grateful for Teddy’s caretaker of over six years, Marilyn McLeod, for the tremendous love and caring that she gave to our mother. Her devotion and support will always be paramount in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to The American Lung Association.
