Charles Thomas Self, Jr. passed away July 13, 2013, at Claridge Court, Prairie Village, Kan. He was born to Susie Alleen (Pilkington) Self and Charles Thomas Self, Sr. on Dec. 14, 1929, in Birmingham, Ala. His parents and his sister, Charlene Epps, predecease him. He grew up in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in business, and then served in the U.S. Army in Europe during the Korean War. He met his wife of 56 years, Joy Arthaud Self in Hollywood, Fla. They were married Nov. 29, 1957, and were blessed with a daughter, Dana Self. They lived in Florida and Iowa before transferring to Kansas City in 1971, where Charles was the Branch Manager for the Kansas City office of Crawford & Company Insurance Adjusters, a company he was with for 38 years. Charles was a Sigma Nu, a Mason, New Smyrna Beach Chapter, a member of the Kansas City Claims Association, and of Old Mission United Methodist Church. He and Joy traveled the world when he retired and he became a proud grandfather in 2002. He leaves behind his wife, Joy, daughter, Dana Self, and granddaughter, Jia Yi Self. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Claridge Court who were so kind and loving to Charles and his family. In lieu of flowers, any memorials may be sent to Old Mission United Methodist Church. Memorial service 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at Old Mission United Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Rd., Fairway, Kan. Private burial.
