Velma Sterling

Velma Vardeman Sterling, born Dec. 11, 1914, passed Nov. 4, 2012. Velma was born in Dunnegan, Mo., to Charles and Minnie Hammons, the sixth of eight children. She married William F. Vardeman Dec. 31, 1938, they had two children and three grandchildren. William passed in Oct. 1980. Velma later married Kenneth Sterling; he passed Sept. 1992. Velma is survived by her son, Kenneth and wife Myrna Vardeman and grandson, William and daughter, Susan and husband Rob Swift and grandchildren, William and Julie and brother, Finis Hammons and many nieces and nephews. Velma was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Charles, Connie, Harold, sisters, Eunice, Dora, Gladys. Beloved mother, sister, daughter rest with the Lord. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66210. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
