MRS. E. A. (VERNA) WILKINSON
After 95 years of a wonderful life, Verna Marie Wilkinson passed away November 20, 2010. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with funeral services following at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 23rd at D. W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. Interment will be at Odessa Cemetery in Odessa, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christian Family Services, 10500 Barkley Ste. 216, Overland Park, KS.
Verna was born December 31, 1914, in Salem, Oregon to Lynn and Julia Ryland. She graduated from Odessa Missouri High School, and then continued her education earning her R.N. from Research Hospital School of Nursing. It was there she met Dr. E. A. “Wilkie” Wilkinson. They were married on June 13, 1938, and had celebrated 67 wonderful years together when he passed away in 2005. She was a dedicated and loving mother to her children, giving them practical and spiritual guidance. She was a very talented needlepoint artist, gifting each family member with a treasured heirloom.
A member of Indian Hills Country Club, she was an enthusiastic golfer and organizer of women’s tournaments. She was an active member of Research Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and Jackson County Medical Society Auxiliary, and was a charter member of the Overland Park Church of Christ.
Her parents, siblings, and husband preceded her in death. She is survived by her children: Jennifer Wilkinson of Overland Park, KS, Jim & Julie Wilkinson of Lenexa, KS, Barbara & Bill Lovelace of Granbury, TX, Joanne & Jack McKinney of Searcy, AR, and Kay Alexander of Lewisville, TX,13 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 7 great, great grandchildren.
