Virgil Hollenbeck, MD

February 27, 1924 — May 1, 2017

Dr. Virgil Clayton Hollenbeck of Leawood, Kansas, 93, passed away May 1, 2017.  He was born in Donegal, Kansas on February 27, 1924, the son of Lester and Fern Hollenbeck, and later moved to Hope, KS, where he graduated from high school as valedictorian in 1942.   Virgil was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy in WWII, stationed in the Pacific theater aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard.  After the war, he returned home to the University of Kansas, where he met the love of his life, Dorothy Belle Hogan.  They married in 1950 and have celebrated 66 beautiful years of marriage.
Virgil graduated from the KU School of Medicine in 1953, and went on to practice family medicine in Eureka, Kansas for 20 years, and later in Clear Lake City, Texas for 15 years, before retiring to Marco Island, Florida in 1989.   He filled his days of retirement by travelling the world and mastering the art of wood and stone sculpture, which he continued until his last years.   Virgil loved his family, his 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, and often proclaimed in their presence, “It doesn’t get any better than this!” He remained a true blue Kansas Jayhawk throughout his life, and took great pride in being a role model for two more generations of “Jay Docs” in the family.
Survivors include sons John Gregory Hollenbeck (children Aaron and Hannah Hollenbeck); Dr. Larry  (Paula) Hollenbeck (children Dr. Brian (Emily) Hollenbeck, Megan (Waylon) Arndt, Bridget (Eric) Rolfe, Claire and Madeline Hollenbeck); Bradley (Ann G) Hollenbeck, (children Mary and John), great grandchildren Dane, Natalie, Tate and Bennett Hollenbeck.
Visitation will be from 11:00-12:00, Saturday, May 6, 2017 followed by a funeral service at 12:00 both at Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, Kansas.   Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association or Asbury United Methodist Church.
