Virginia Hermann Gyovai

Virginia Marie Hermann Gyovai (nee Meyer), 95 years of age, peacefully entered into the Kingdom Triumphant early Wednesday morning on February 12, 2020 at Lamar Court - Assisted Living Facility in Overland Park, Kansas.  She received the Sacrament of the Altar on Sunday Feb 9, and was eagerly awaiting her Saviors invitation to join Him in eternal peace and glory promised to her and all who believe in Him.

Virginia was born February 16, 1924 to Otto and Marie (Berndt) Meyer in Chicago, Illinois.  She was baptized at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Parish in Chicago, on March 23, 1924.  She was confirmed at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Chicago, on March 21, 1937. Her confirmation verse: “I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).  “I lived my life accordingly!”

Virginia graduated from Kelly High School, Chicago, on January 30,1942 and was on the honor roll all four (4) years.  She was also very proud that she never missed a day of school in elementary or in high school.  Virginia wrote many poems and enjoyed reading books and working on crossword puzzles. Her mind was active and lucid to the very last day.

Virginia was joined in marriage to Delbert Charles Hermann on March 22, 1945.  They were married in San Diego, California as Delbert was in the U.S. Navy and was in port on leave.  Virginia and Del met in confirmation class, and then both attended Kelly High School together. However, they never dated each other.  When Del joined
the U.S. Navy out of high school, he wrote his mother to have Virginia over to the house because he was going to marry her.

Virginia worked for the World War II effort at Western Electric making parts. After the war, she stayed at home raising two (2) children- Del and Cindy.  She was always active in the many churches she attended, giving her time and talents to Altar guild, Bell Choir and volunteering to serve the Lord and anyone who needed help or encouragement.  In her later years she always witnessed her faith and ministered in ways that sometimes she was not even aware that she had an impact on someone else’s life.  Her greatest joy in life was her Lord, family and many friends, both old and new.

Virginia and Delbert were married for 31 years. Delbert died on December 8, 1976.  She was lost without him, but soon decided to get started on life again.  She loved dancing (as in her late teens she was a ballroom dancer) so she attended a square dance one night and met her second husband Frank Gyovai.  He lifted her spirits and soon married again on July 28,1978.  Frank also served in World War II, escaping the Bataan Death March, and surviving in the jungles for 33 months.  Hence, Frank had many health issues and he then passed away on December 21, 1984.  Virginia was a devoted caregiver to both husbands.

Her grandson: Clayton Charles ( Laura Schiltz ) Frans of Shawnee, Kansas
Her great grandchildren: Petra, Hazel, Eleanor, Amos, Porter Frans
Her nieces: Sharon Boske, Marlene Jagow, Roberta Lundhal
Her nephew: Baron Meyer
Her step-children: Jim Gyovai, Mike ( Jean ) Gyovai, Sherry Gyovai, Sister Mary Margaret ( Prioress of The Convent of the Infant Jesus )
Also step-grandchildren and step- great grandchildren

Family would like to thank all caregivers in Virginia’s care, Lamar Court and Crossroads Hospice - especially Jamie and Rachael.  Your dedication and compassion was so appreciated by Virginia and family.

Virginia’s memorial and celebration of life service will be held Thursday, March 5, 2020 at 11:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church – 920 S. Alta Lane, Olathe, Kansas 66061. Visitation will be from 10:00AM - 11:30 AM.  Service will be at 11:30 AM. Pastor Perry Sukstorf will officiate.  There will be a lunch immediately following service in the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to attend lunch and share in the fellowship and many stories about Virginia.

Inurnment will take place May 18, 2020, at Bethania Cemetery – 7701 S Archer Road, Justice, Ill. 60458. #708-458-2270. Graveside service will be at 11:00 AM with lunch following service at a local restaurant to be announced later.
