Vivian J. Paegelow
October 21, 1922 - October 9, 2012
Vivian Paegelow, 89, of Overland Park, KS passed away on October 9, 2012, at Village Shalom. She was born in Chicago, Illinois to Stephen J. Wieczor and Alvina Havlicek Wieczor. Vivian graduated from Roosevelt High School in Chicago in 1940 and then studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She met her future husband Lieutenant George Washington Paegelow during a dance at the Hotel George Washington in West Palm Beach. They were married on August 23, 1945 in Chicago. After 52 years of marriage George preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors include her sons, Richard and Alan, three granddaughters, Marcie, Tricia, and Jill, a niece, Robeta Ellis, and a nephew, Steven Wieczor.
The young Paegelow family moved to Kansas City in 1949 and raised two children, Richard and Alan, which Vivian recently said was her proudest accomplishment. Vivian was an avid golfer and played for many years at Santa Fe Hills, Emporia and Milburn country clubs in both women's and couple's social leagues and competitions. For many years she was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Kansas City, Messiah Lutheran Church in Emporia, and then Bethany Lutheran Church in Overland Park.
From 2003 to early 2012 Vivian was a resident of Town Village in Leawood where she met many new friends and rekindled several old friendships. She was an avid fan of cross word puzzles and would always ask visitors to find at least one particularly challenging word. Vivian supported several major charities, including the American Heart Association, KU Endowment, and the Smithsonian Institution. She also supported many other charities, including the Audubon Society, Arbor Day Foundation, the Ocean Conservancy, Boys Town, the USO, the Kansas City Rescue Mission, and the Macular Degeneration Association.
The family would like to thank Vivian's wonderful physicians, the patient and caring nurses at Village Shalom in Overland Park, and the staff of Kansas City Hospice for all their support. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Heart Association, or a favorite charity in memory of Vivian.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 21, 2012, in the Courtyard of Memories next to the Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS.
