Walker T. Sumner, Sr., age 84, passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2008. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at 2 p.m. at D.W. Newcomer's Sons, College and Metcalf.
Walker was born on March 24, 1923, in Richards, Mo. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen Sumner, and his four children: Donna Sumner, Galveston, Texas, Walker (Tollie) Sumner, Jr. and wife Cynthia, Forsythe, Mo., Terry Sumner and wife Nancy, Marshall, Texas, Fred Sumner and wife Jan, Overland Park, Kan., and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and three brothers.
Walker served in the U.S. Army during WWII, in the battles of Rhineland, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge- under Gen. George Patton) and campaigns in Central Europe. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, a Bronze Star Medal and one Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster- the last of a breed. Walker retired from TWA after 27 years of service, and was the proud owner of Tops Body Shop for 12 years. He was a great story teller, avid hunter, and lover of roses and gardening.
