Major Walter D. Tarbutton, Ret.

Walter D. Tarbutton, Roeland Park, KS, attained his final victory July, 8, 2008, to be with his Lord.

Visitation will be Sunday July 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M at D.W. Newcomer?s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, with a memorial service at the Chapel Monday, July 14, at 10:00 A.M. Interment with military honors will be at 2:00 P. M. at Maple Hill Cemetery, Maple Hill, KS. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that any donations may be made to KU Hospital or charity of your choice.

Walter was born May 14, 1919, at Eskridge, KS, the youngest child of Eli Bert and Violet Mackie Tarbutton. Due to his mother?s death, he was sent to live with his Aunt Annie and Uncle Green Wilson Tarbutton near Mansfield, MO where he attended elementary school. He later returned to Maple Hill, KS, where he lived with his father and graduated valedictorian of his high school class. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940 and upon completion of OCS was commissioned as combat infantry officer serving with Patton?s Third Army, 95th Inf. Div. Although Walter participated in many battles, the best known was the Battle of Metz. He was severely wounded near Saarlautern Germany in 1944. For its bravery, the 95th Div. was known as the ?Iron Men of Metz.? Following completion of active duty in 1946, Walter served in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1967 retiring as a Major. Decorations include the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with Three Bronze Stars. Walter later served as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army and as a Claims Supervisor with the Social Security Admin. in Kansas City, MO, retiring in 1975. He later worked as a claims examiner for the Kansas Div. of Unemployment from 1976 to 1986. Walter attended numerous reunions of the 95th Div. alumni organization and is a member of First United Methodist Church of Shawnee.

Walter?s leadership, integrity and perseverance set a high standard for his family and colleagues to aspire to. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris (Oliver) Tarbutton; three children, Daryl (Geraldine) Tarbutton of Chicago, Barbara Collins of Roeland Park, Roger (Ruth) Tarbutton of Overland Park, four grandchildren, Sean Collins, Whitney Tarbutton , Sharon Tarbutton, Morgan Tarbutton and two great-grandchildren, Chandler and Tye Collins. Walter was predeceased by four brothers and sisters and is survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Kolde Tarbutton of Hawthorne, CA. The family would like to extend its thanks to all the fine health care professionals who assisted Walter during his final illnesses.
