Wayne E. Moore, 96, of Lakeview Village in Lenexa, passed away peacefully June 5, 2017. The son of William and Mary Moore, he was born in Canton, MO on January 17, 1921. He grew up near Quincy, IL graduating from Camp Point High School in 1939. He had two brothers and two sisters and the family moved to California in 1941. He joined the navy in 1942 and served as chief of an aircraft maintenance crew until the end of WWII. He married and had one son, Glen, while stationed in San Diego. After the war he worked as a carpenter, a construction inspector and finally a construction superintendent building commercial structures. Following a divorce, he moved to Kansas City in 1962 where he was a member of the Carpenters Union, Local 61 until he retired in 1987. His many construction projects included the Kansas City Art Institute and The Great Ape House at the Swope Park Zoo in 1966. He also taught at the carpenter’s apprentice school for many years.
He married Louise McClanahan, who had a daughter, Deborah, in 1962. They lived in Overland Park until Louise’s death in 2002, when he relocated to Lakeview Village in Lenexa. While there he was elected to the Residents’ Community Council. Wayne was a very competitive pool player and won numerous tournaments.
Over the years, Wayne developed many interests including hunting, fishing, waterskiing and vegetable gardening, which he enjoyed sharing with his family and friends. He took numerous hunting trips with his son, Glen, and also taught his grandson, Ryan, to target shoot and fish. Tomatoes were his specialty in the garden and the last couple of years he was passing on his techniques to Aaron Smith, his physical therapist and friend at Lakeview. His lesser known talents included ping pong and croquet which he enjoyed teaching to granddaughter Erin. He kept his carpentry skills sharp by building bird houses, lazy susans, and whirligig bird spinners, which he gave to family and friends.
Family was important to Wayne and he was very generous with this time and talents. There would be gatherings of aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, kids and grandkids at his house for cookouts, croquet and badminton.
Baseball was a favorite pastime and he coached his son’s little league team. Many of his players made the all-star team including son Glen. He was a big KC Royals fan and often won tickets at the union meetings. He had tickets to one of the World Series games against the St. Louis Cardinals which he shared with his son-ion-law, Jeff.
He was a member of Prairie Baptist Church since 1962, when he and Deborah were baptized.
