Wayne Nyberg

October 3, 1934 — July 8, 2015

Wayne H. Nyberg, 80, Lee’s Summit, Missouri (formerly Overland Park, Kansas) passed away July 8, 2015.   A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kansas.  A visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, also at the chapel.  The graveside service will immediately follow at Mount Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Kansas.
Wayne was born on October 3, 1934, to Henry and Alice Nyberg in Clay Center, Kansas, with sister, Nola, and brother, Don.  His curiosity, inventiveness, and love of science began at an early age. He learned how things worked and how to fix them from his father who was a mechanic.  Wayne served as a Navy corpsman during the Korean War.  He graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in chemistry and worked as a research chemist contributing to medical, food, and plastics research. Wayne married his wife, Donna Lashley, and raised two children.  Donna passed away in 2004.  Wayne married Betty Conrad in 2006.  In retirement they have enjoyed traveling and sharing adventures in the United States and abroad.  Wayne is survived by wife, Betty Conrad; daughter, Lisa; son, Doug; daughter-in-law, Lynne; and grandchildren, Kelly and John.
Wayne carried his inventiveness and his ability to fix things into his hobbies: sailing and radio-controlled airplanes.  He taught himself how to make and repair sails for a variety of sailboats.  He loved racing and sailing with his friends at the Jacomo Sailing Club and in later years at Stockton Lake.   He also built and flew radio-controlled airplanes. His fellow flying friends at the 95th Street Flying Group and KCRC Flying Club at Lake Jacomo enjoyed many great flights together.
Wayne was known for his ability to fix almost everything and his willingness to help others. His motto was, “Just fix it!” and he was able to do that until he was diagnosed with ALS.  He faced ALS with great courage and grace.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to ALS Research: ALS Association Mid-America Chapter, 6950 Squibb Rd. Suite 210, Mission, KS 66202.  Fond memories and condolences for the family may be left at www.JohnsonCountyChapel.com.
