Wendell Dean Nelson was born August 17th, 1965, as the fifth son to Jerome and Catherene Nelson in Omaha, Nebraska and lived the majority of his life in Yutan, Nebraska. He graduated from Yutan High School in 1983. After which, he enlisted into the United States Army. During his time in the Army, he served as active duty at Fort Stewart, Georgia and Darmstadt, West Germany. After leaving active duty, he remained as a reservist up until his car accident in November 1998. Wendell loved the Army and the Army loved him, being awarded two Army Commendation Medals and seven Army Achievement Medals just to list a few.

Wendell married his wife Lisa on June 25th, 1983, in Omaha. Wendell and Lisa enjoyed 39 long, loving years of marriage. They welcomed Bradly in 1986 while stationed in Germany. Kyle came along in May 1991 and their youngest Jacob in September 1992. Wendell was a family man through and through. He lived each day to his fullest capacity for his boys.
