William Atwood

William Lees Atwood, 96, of Kansas City, Missouri died peacefully at his home at Bishop Spencer Place on Friday, July 15th, 2016.  Bill dedicated his life to his family and his community.  He loved helping people in this community, as evidenced by his many and varied leadership positions.  These include:  Board member of St. Luke’s Hospital for over 20 years, Charter member and past president of the St. Luke’s Foundation, receiving Fellow of the Year by the Foundation; two-time Senior Warden at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; finance committee chair for 20 years for the Diocese of West Missouri, receiving the Bishop’s Medal and the Bishop’s Shield.  He served as Board member of many charitable organizations, including Family and Children’s Services, Westport Allen Center, Genesis School, and the Family Study Center at UMKC.  He was a member and past president of the Kansas City Country Club and a member of the River Club.

Bill’s career in banking and investment counseling services spanned over 65 years.  In 1949, he joined First National Bank of Kansas City and rose to the level of Executive Vice President in charge of the Investment Department.  In 1990, at age 70, together with Steve Palmer, he co-founded the investment management firm of Atwood & Palmer, Inc. that has grown to be a successful firm serving others.

Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marian Olander Atwood, two daughters: Mary Atwood Miner of Austin, Texas and Susan Atwood Eschenroeder (Thomas) of Richmond, Virginia, five grandchildren: Jennifer Ferguson (Craig), Christopher Miner, Rebecca Eschenroeder, Caitlin Eschenroeder, and Alex Eschenroeder, and two great-grandchildren: Abigayle Ferguson and Hannah Ferguson.  A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 27th at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 4041 Main Street, KCMO 64111.  A private burial service will be held after the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Atwood & Palmer Fund in care of St. Luke’s Foundation, 4225 Baltimore Avenue, KCMO 64111 or to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or Day School.  Fond memories and condolences may be left at www.johnsoncountychapel.com
