William Crawford

July 7, 1928 — February 25, 2015

William L. Crawford, 86, of Prairie Village, Kan., died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, at Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care in Kansas City, Mo.

A visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel and Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, Kan.  The funeral service will at held at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel.  Immediately following the services, family and friends will meet to share memories and celebrate Bill’s life at his daughter and son-in-law’s house, Julie and Mike Wood.

Bill was born on July 7, 1928 in Hutchinson, Ks., the son of John L. and Virga Mae Crawford.  Bill went to Wentworth Military Academy and completed his graduate studies from Kansas State University in 1950. He began his career working for Dillon’s Grocery Store Corporation.  He later worked for IGA Grocery Corporation before opening a restaurant franchise.  Upon retirement he worked in the social security court system until his death.

On September 18, 1977 he married Lyn Kerns from Wichita, Kansas in Vienna, Austria.  Both loved traveling and during their 38 years of marriage they were able to visit 29 countries and 82 cities.  They enjoyed theatre and the symphony.  Bill was fun and had boundless energy.  When not traveling he enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, making stain glass, playing with their dog, Schnitzel, and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren.  He was able to spend special time with his granddaughter, Ella.  It was a special love of his to take her to the neighborhood pond and fish in his “buggy.”

Bill is survived by his wife, Lyn Crawford; his children, Lynette (Dave) DeBolt from Shawnee, Kansas; Denise Brockmeier from Lake Charles, Louisiana; Julie (Mike) Wood from Leawood, Kansas; Penny Tomlinson from Mesa, Arizona; Lorie Blehm from Prairie Village, Kansas, and his eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.  His sisters preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity at K-State.
