William Peter Koppenaal (1926-2013)
William P. (Bill) Koppenaal, 86, Overland Park, KS passed away on April 28 after a prolonged bout with cancer. Visitation (1:00 pm) and services (2:00 pm) will be held at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel at 11200 Metcalf Ave in Overland Park on Saturday May 4, 2013. Bill was born August 27, 1926 in Menomonie, Wisconsin to Peter J. and Bernice J. Koppenaal. He lived through his high school years in suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Upon graduation from high school in 1944, he joined the U.S. Navy reserve program and served there until the end of WWII. He went on to college and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering. Bill then went to work for General Electric Co. in the field of industrial engineering, designing and selling complex, light and heavy equipment to many different industries. Through his 38 years with GE he earned many product and sales accolades. He retired in 1987 and enjoyed traveling and camping the US in his motor home. His first marriage was to Alice Naylor, with whom he had seven sons, all of which survive him: Gary (Athens GA), David (& wife Margaret, Richland WA), Jim (Columbia MO), Brian (& wife Jody, Glen Arbor MI), Bill Jr (& wife Jane, Jackson MO), Keith (Columbia MO) and Warren (Columbia MO). He was preceded in death by infant daughter Diane Lynn (1959) and ex-wife Alice (1999). His second marriage was to Loise Darr, who passed away in 2009. He is also survived by two brothers, Dick Koppenaal (& wife Barbara, Salt Spring Island CN) and Ted Koppenaal (& wife Linda, Las Vegas NV), two step-sons Duane (& wife Dottie) Cowan (Bethel, PA) and Bob (& wife Rosie) Cowan (Sterling Heights MI), ten grandchildren (Laura, Andrew; Joel, Jenna; Sara, Samuel; Brittany, Tiffany, Christopher, Tayler) and one great-grandson (Cade), five step-grandchildren (Kim, Mark, Cindy, Dan, Deb) and four step-great children (Nathan, Natalie; Sean, Jason). Bill is remembered for his intelligence, prudence, and determination, along with a sharp wit and sense of humor.
