WILMA ELIZABETH NUSBAUM

Wilma Elizabeth Nusbaum, 89, went home to be with the Lord December 31, 2012, surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held at Leawood Presbyterian Church, 2715 W. 83rd, on Saturday, January 5, at 2:00 pm.

Born Wilma Elizabeth Garren on January 14, 1923, in Orlando, Florida, she is the daughter of William Xenophon and Margaret Melissa Garren. Wilma graduated from Orlando High School in 1941, and worked as a bookkeeper for Armour and Company. While horseback riding, she met her husband, Wellman Edward (Bill) Nusbaum, who was stationed in Orlando with the Army. They were married on New Year's Eve 1945.

Wilma and Bill moved to the Kansas City area in 1946, where Bill began his career with Black & Veatch as an electrical engineer and Wilma dedicated her life to raising a family and making a home.

A gifted soprano, Wilma won national recognition for her voice in high school. She turned down opportunities to sing professionally, choosing instead to devote her love of music to singing in the church choir.

As a child, Wilma played baseball with her brothers and was an excellent swimmer and diver. She enjoyed playing golf, which she didn't take up until she was 50. We were all proud of her when on July 13, 1995 she made a hole-in-one with her five wood.

Wilma was an excellent cook and loved to sew and quilt. She was actively involved in volunteering for school, church and community activities throughout her life. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.

Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, her parents, and three brothers. She is survived by her daughter Karen Nusbaum of Leawood, and her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Alice Nusbaum of Prairie Village.

The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the staffs of the Skilled Nursing Unit of Brighton Gardens of Prairie Village and Continua Hospice for the many months of loving and compassionate care given to Wilma.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Leawood Presbyterian Church; Continua Hospice, 13002 State Line Road, Leawood, KS 66209; or City Union Mission, 1100 E. Elm St., Kansas City, MO 64108.
