Winson J. E. Finney of Overland Park, KS died Monday, July 27, 2009, at the Kansas City Hospice House.
The Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00am, Friday, July 31 at Ascension Catholic Church, 9510 W. 127th St., Overland Park, KS. Entombment in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Thursday, July 29 at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf. A brief prayer service will be at 7:45 pm during visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Winson Finney Memorial Fund c/o Ascension Catholic Church.
Winson was born on July 19, 1925 in St. Catherine, MO to Joseph Elmer Finney and Mabel (Lunday) Finney. Winson spent his childhood years along with his sisters Fiona, “Winnie” & Laura Mae in Brookfield, MO.
Shortly after returning from Pacific Zone WWII Navy service, he married Joan (Huff) Finney on July 22, 1946. Winson worked for Wilson Foods for thirty years, beginning as route salesman and earning multiple promotions until he became marketing and merchandising manager. In retirement, he served his community through volunteer work as well as president of the homeowner’s association where he resided. Winson was well known for his generosity, good spirit, humor and willingness to help others. Whether in late night sessions with his poker buddies, or helping a stranded grandchild with her car, Winson combined helping others with an endless supply of one-liners.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters. Survivors include his wife Joan of 63 years; one daughter, Candise Cole (Dr. Sherman Cole); and two grandchildren, Mike Cole (John Lucas) & Sydna Cole Taylor (Josh Taylor).
