Won Lee, 80, of Overland Park, KS, died peacefully at his home on the morning of Friday, November 23, 2018 after a five-year struggle with cancer.
Won was born in Sinuiju, in what is now North Korea, the eldest son of nine siblings. He escaped North Korea to the South with his father on a harrowing journey during the Korean War. After surviving profound poverty, he ultimately became a star pupil, graduating from the prestigious Yonsei University in 1962. He married Sung Lan Choi in 1965, moved briefly to Okinawa Japan, before moving the Kansas City area in 1971. He worked as an architect/expert draftsman for his entire career, and served as an elder at his church for decades. He was tireless in his faithfulness to his church and family. He found his greatest joys in witnessing the blossoming of his children and grandchildren, and doting on his wife.
He is survived by his mother-in-law, Jin Hee Lee; wife, Sung Lan Lee; sons David (Tamatha), John (Mia), Jonas (Heather), and James (Jane); grandchildren Brandon, Cameron, Gabrielle, Julian, Jaime, Johnnie, Ciel, Amitie, Espere, Sage, Chanse, Connor, Sophie, and Vivienne.
Memorial services and visitation will be held at Kansas Mission Church on Friday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m. A brief burial service will be held at Kansas Mission Church on Saturday, December 1 at 10:00 a.m., immediately followed by the burial at Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens.
