Zachary Harsch

August 25, 1980 — January 30, 2009

Zachary Lee Harsch, 28, died suddenly after a short illness on January 30, 2009, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Zach was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 25, 1980. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and a diehard Iowa Hawkeye fan. Zach enjoyed all sports, and played fantasy football with fervor. If the Cubs end their 100 year drought this year, it will not be a coincidence. They will truly have an angel in the outfield.

Zach graduated from the University of Iowa, and received his teaching degree from UMKC. Zach was nearly finished with his masters in counseling. He taught history to seventh graders at Westridge Middle School. Zach was dedicated to his profession, and took pride in the relationships he developed with his students. The rewards of teaching continued to inspire him, and he was proud of his class. Zach also enjoyed his teaching colleagues, and appreciated the mentors who helped him become a better teacher.

Survivors include his loving wife, Bobbie, and his soon-to-be born son (known for now as Thor Maximus), and his faithful Springer spaniel, Vito. He is also survived by his sister and best friend, Nicole, mother and stepfather, Toni Mills and Karl Madrecki, father Richard Harsch, Grandpa and Grandma Lee and Rose Harsch, Grandma Char Stocking, Grandma and Grandpa Patricia and Dave Sapata-Mills, and many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. Zach will also be missed by Bobbie's sister's family, Andrea, Andy and Ella Morris and brother William, and Bobbie's parents, Herb and Vera Lichtenberger. Zach had a great network of close friends who join us in our sorrow. Our hearts are broken.

Thank you from the family and friends of Zach to the caring staff of OPRMC. Thanks also to the Applebee's angels and other fantastic friends who provided much needed nourishment to the waiting room in the ICU. We really appreciate your caring and thoughtfulness.

Services will be at Johnson County Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas on Tuesday, February 3 at 10 am. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 with a prayer service at 7 pm.

Memorial contributions in Zach's memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Love Fund at Westridge Middle School, 9300 Nieman Rd., Shawnee Mission, KS 66214. After Thor Maximus is born, a 529 account will be established for his college fund. Andrea Morris will collect contributions for the account. Andrea may be contacted at andrea.vera.morris@gmail.com.

We love you and we will miss you Zach.
